Belém Tower
A Historic Landmark in Lisbon

A Brief History
Built between 1514 and 1520 during the reign of King Manuel I, it served as a defensive structure to protect Lisbon’s harbor. It was also used as a customs checkpoint and later as a prison. The tower reflects the unique Manueline style, featuring maritime symbols, carved stonework, and historical details that tell the story of Portugal’s sea explorations.
In 1983, it was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery.
